Keeping nasty critters out of your campsite
« on: September 14, 2007, 01:57:13 PM »
What are some good ways to keep nasty (importantly: Poisonous) critters out of your campsite?

If you're in a campground, you can't justify a clean burn of the area but what about some other things?

Place Hawthorn or other spiked branches around your camp, which will block most snakes that dont have a wish of bleeding to death.....

Oh, sorry.....

Hehe no problem.  Those are very good things to note, just not exactly what I was looking for... others may read it and need it though.

Everyone probably knows this too, but if you want to keep mosquitos or ticks away, burning sage leaves or termite nests will help smoke the area out.

I knew the termite mound but didn't know the leafs, thanks.  I wonder how effective plain ole fire smoke is.  I have read a great book, many times, called Totch. It's a biography of an everglades old timer growing up when florida was nothing but fish camps and moonshine and he says the insects were so thick you couldn't open your eyes fully but when you got the fire smoking it would clear a % out.

Good book. It's very survival related. Fishing for food and money, hunting racoons and gators for meat and skin...  moonshine and all.

Good stuff guys! Anyone know where you can find natural sage?

O this is my favorite

snuggles dryer sheets  = mosquito repellent

just take the dryer sheets and wipe them over you skin and then put it in a shirt pocket, or something.

they worked good for central, utah.
