This is the start of a thread about all things crossbows.
Crossbow hunting is a good way to introduce young hunters to the sport and also a way for those who can no longer bowhunt to keep hunting.
Please check all local laws in regards to crossbows before attempting to hunt laws vary greatly from state to state and a few states ban crossbows entirely most states require handicap permit but some states allow there use during certain seasons. Please contact your local game warden for more info on crossbows.
I know a few of us here shoot crossbows
I myself shoot a SA sports fever recurve crossbow I picked up at my local rural king for under $200
I have done some modifications to it to make it more to my liking
I added a Barnett sling to replace the factory one I also added a aim sports tactical scope with range finding reticle
I shot a crossbow at farmageddon man what a recoil
Each crossbow has its own type of recoil SG
Compound crossbows are also louder then a recurve crossbow.
I have more content for this thread I will be posting this weekend.
I got a crossbow arrow review and a couple of reviews for broadheads along with more general knowledge of crossbows
What made you decide on this one, SGH?
The price its budget friendly and its easy to buy better arrows better scope and diffrent things to make it better suited to the person shooting it.
Not a big crossbow fan I have one and shoot it but like my compound and Long bow a lot more.
Not a big crossbow fan I have one and shoot it but like my compound and Long bow a lot more.I shot longbows and recurves for many years but after double carpal tunnel surgery and double ulnar nerve surgery I couldn't draw even a 40lb bow anymore so that's when I switched to crossbows.
I still limit my shots like I did with a longbow and I still use the same broadhead I used before
I am working on a restless sling bow right now I think it will work great on small game up to coon size.
Nice be sure to post some pictures
I upgraded my crossbow this evening I now own a Barnett recruit compound it shoots faster and its of better quality then my previous bow
im an Excalibur man myself, i own a matrix mega.........i do like crossbows alot more, but im a guy who needs to do repairs in the fieldif needed, excalibur makes awesome recurves.
I had a recurve and I wanted a faster bow when I upgraded only one I could was an excal but 225lb draw which is illegal here in illinois
as its too much or they dont think its enough?
200 lb is max draw weight allowed.
I keep up on routine matinence so I'm not worried about having a compound crossbow like I was before.
I did some broadhead testing this morning
I was using an Allen fixed blade broadhead and a NAP shockwave both 100 grain and both on Easton recruit arrows that come with my new crossbow
Both arrows shot from 12 yards away both arrows have a total weight of 400 grains
The arrow sticking out the back is the nap shockwave tipped arrow..
I was extremely impressed with the results
impressive what is that you were shooting at
That is a common bag style crossbow target I borrowed from my neighbor its quite heavy and designed to stop high speed crossbow arrows
It takes alot to shoot thru one
yea it looks like it
Did some broadhead testing this morning
First was a g5 t3 crossbow broadhead the second is a rage chisel tip 2 blade both are 100 grain
The rage has a 2" cut
the g5 1.5" cut
The test was simple head on target shots from 15 yards to test penetration
The rage got 12" of penetration while the g5 got 15" of penetration.
Neither of these broadheads failed my testing but I still have further testing before I would recommend them I have been using g5 broadheads off and on for ten years
I've always found that mechanical crossbow heads don't deploy worth a damn, I tested rage this year and it didn't deploy once!
Try rage chisel tip two blade I had them deploy completely with my recurve and it shoots right at 235 fps
My Barnett shoots at 310fps and don't like fixed blade broadheads at all so I made the switch to mechanicals
