We were out again this morning, starting before sunrise. It was about 20 degrees warmer today than yesterday morning with a little more wind. Moon was still almost full, giving lots of light even before the sun came up. As I was walking in, four does were crossing the road and going into a small piece of timber to the west of where I was going to set up and wait.
It is beautiful standing out in the morning, listening to the sound of the morning. I worked into the area very slowly, stopping ever few steps to watch, listen, take in the morning, listening to the sound of the trees of the rest of the area. This is one of the things I love about deer hunting is the chance to spend time out in the world, away from all the daily stuff that piles up on us. You are reminded of the natural sounds of the woods and the wind and to identify those that occur and those that are made by something moving - birds, small animals, larger animals. If you blend in, it only takes a few minutes for you to become part of the scene.
We were out for about 4 hours this morning. I saw the four does when I first walked in and another that I startled as I was backtracking along a fence line. Other than that, the deer were elsewhere today. Clouds moved and the humidity increased about mid morning.
I was sitting out this afternoon and a flock of geese came over. I heard them honking in the distance and could finally see them as they came closer. The flew almost right over me. They were close enough that I could hear the air moving through the feathers on their wings as they went over. They were not in full migration yet, just practicing forming their "V" and getting in rhythm.
A good day to be outside.
