Just to start a topic to continue Watchers search for a GPS solution, if anyone has any recommended smartphone apps that they've used and approve of please share!

The one I'm using most often at the moment is ViewRanger, and I can't complain about it so far. Apart from that I'm not sure what else to say so, any questions?

I just received my new Samsug Galaxy S4 today.  I've been running the android platform on many devices for years, but the last phone I had was a Windows phone (Interface blows the android away), but not being mainstream enough, our carrier is dropping it, so I had to switch.    Most apps are ported cross platform so it doesn't matter if you have a droid or Iphone or winphone etc.  But there are a few specific to each platform.   My old old old reader device is having some battery issues (It's 8 years old now), so I'll be porting all my PDF's etc over to the phone on a micro SD card.   I've always kept most apps as "Static" apps, or reader/information apps.  Just so when I run across something I don't know about, or I need specific instructions that have not been memorized I can pull them up quick. (Regardless of data connection).   Like having an entire library of survival books in your pocket any time you need them.

I'd have to say a good PDF reader is the first key app.
I was using the basic free app "PDF Viewer" that came with my asus tablet, but lately I've been using the kindle app for PDF viewing.  I like it a little better on the larger tablet, but will find out on the phone in the next couple of days.

I just downloaded ViewRanger.  I've played with it a little but not much.  Not sure how crazy I am about it.

Is there decent geocaching software out there?

Thats the paid version, on my windows phone they had a free basic version and the full version.   Just limited the number of daily downloads to 10 but worked great. Might have to bite the bullet and get it to use until I get the new gps.

Keep in mind that the "smart phone" apps will navigate you to the cache using a map, but they don't actually receive a satellite signal.  They work ok for urban caches around town, but not so well out in the woods.  If you don't have a wifi or cell connection, your accuracy will drop off substantially.

I have cached with a few people using a smart phone app and a GPSr has always been much more accurate.  It still would be a fun way to get started.

I used Geo cache navigator from Trimble outdoors back when me and cepterjockey were Geo caching and I didn't have any issues with it its a fairly decent app for the price
