Didn't think these were this far east
« on: May 20, 2013, 02:10:50 PM »
This is a tree that is normally further west (As in California).  I've seen it only a couple times in the Midwest.

Here is the leaf.

And a better shot of the "Cones".  (These are hard as rocks).

It looks like a mulberry that has some berries left over however the leaves are round and mulberry have a point on the end. There is a Pakistan Mulberry Tree that has been introduced that grows in California and across the country.

Alder.

Red Alder trees/bushes were the first larger plants to repopulate back into the area blow away by the Mt. St. Helens eruption.

Bingo!!  In this case I was thinking white alder but I didnt grab a picture of the bark.  So it could be red or white.

red alder: look for leaf margins that are tightly rolled under.

white alder: leaf margins are not rolled under.

I remembered the red alder from when I was at Mt. St. Helens.  The alders will  fill in first, providing cover for the lodge pole pines to get established.  Once the alders get so large, the heavy snow pack will break the trees and kill them off, making room for the pines, which as a single center beam, and will not be crushed by the heavy snow.
