Universal edibility test ( does not apply to fungi)
« on: December 07, 2013, 08:06:27 PM »
1. Test on part of the good at a time. Separate any into parts- flower, bud, leaf, stem, root.

2.smell the plant for acid

3. Fast for 8 hours before testing plant. While fasting test for contact poisoning on elbow or wrist.

4.choose small portion of the plant.

5. First touch a small portion on the outside of your lip to test for burning. Wait 3 minutes if no reaction place plant on tongue and wait 15 min. If no reaction chew a pinch and wait for another 15 min. again if there is no reaction swallow the food.

6. Wait 8 hours. If there are Ill effects induce vomiting. If there are no effects eat 1/4 cup of plant prepared the same way. Wait another 8 and if all is well the plant as prepared is safe to eat.

Note- one part of a plant may be edible while other parts are not.

My understanding was that the edibility test was debunked years ago. There are plants that won't irritate the skin (tobacco leaves) but are poisonous to eat.
Well we’re gathered together, at the sunrise of never,

To bring witness to the day we all die

I had heard the same thing, Muddy.  From what I have read, you should learn to identify specific plants (if possible, someone should teach you) and then only eat those particular plants.

I didn't realize that. Good thing you told me cause in a self reliance situation I would have used this test. Now I'll just have to stick with the ones I know.

I picked of a copy of "The Forager's Harvest" by Samual Thayer.  It is geared toward the Midwest and has a lot of great information on edible plants.
